Step aboard one of our all‑weather observation carriages at Pant and enjoy a relaxed steam‑hauled journey into Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons National Park). This is a gentle return trip of around 1 hour 40 minutes through big scenery, following part of the original Brecon & Merthyr Railway.
Leaving Pant, the line runs through quiet woodland then alongside the Taf Fechan Reservoir, with views of water and mountains opening out as you climb the valley to Torpantau, the summit of the old route. You can sit inside the enclosed carriages with large windows or step onto the end balconies to feel the sound and steam a little closer. It suits all ages, from children on their first train ride to older visitors revisiting memories of steam.
On the way back there is a 35‑minute stop at Pontsticill Station, with a café for drinks and light meals, outdoor seating with views over the reservoir, an adventure playground and walking routes nearby. Many visitors choose simply to sit with a cup of tea and watch the train and water.
Back at Pant, your ticket includes access to the workshop viewing area when open, where you can see locomotives and carriages being cared for, plus a shop and tearoom. Free parking is available, seats are reserved, and dogs are welcome on a short lead in all public areas and on the train.
