The Gateway to Old Newcastle

About

Visit our family-friendly historic attraction to walk in the steps of the people who lived and died in the shadow of Newcastle Castle. Steeped in history this imposing Norman fortress, in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, is a rugged reminder of northern England's turbulent history. This was no baron's stately home. Newcastle Castle is a grim reminder of royal authority where armies gathered and criminals were imprisoned and executed. It is where the story of Newcastle began, the reason the city got its name and has the most commanding views over the city and the River Tyne. A great visit no matter the weather, you can easily reach us by car, bike, rail and public transport.

Duration

1.5 hours

Please Note

While the Black Gate is fully accessible, the Castle Keep has many steep stairs and uneven surfaces. In order to support the NHS Test and Trace programme and to comply with the latest Government guidance for the tourism sector we need to collect a few details and keep them for a minimum of 21 days. This is information that we would normally ask for when you book anyway but we just wanted you to know one of the ways that those details may be used. Therefore, when booking we will ask you for the lead member’s name, address and mobile or landline telephone number.
